A diamond certificate is the only document that turns "trust me" into "verify it yourself". Yet most buyers never learn to read one — they check the carat line and stop. Here is what IGI and GIA reports actually say, how the two laboratories differ, and the handful of lines that determine whether a stone is worth its price.
What a diamond certificate is — and is not
A certificate (grading report) is an independent laboratory's assessment of a stone's measurable qualities: the 4Cs, proportions, symmetry, fluorescence. It is issued by a lab with no financial stake in the sale — that independence is its entire value.
What it is not: a valuation. No serious certificate states a price. Anyone showing you a "certificate" with a retail value printed on it is showing you marketing.
IGI and GIA: what actually differs
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) wrote the 4C system in the 1950s and remains the historical reference, strongest in mined diamonds.
IGI (International Gemological Institute) is the world's largest certifier of lab-grown diamonds — it graded them earlier, at larger scale, and its lab-grown reports are the industry standard, which is why ORIZIANO stones carry IGI certificates.
Both grade on the same scales. For lab-grown stones the practical difference today is minimal; what matters is that a certificate from one of the major labs exists at all, with a verifiable report number.
How to read the report, line by line
Shape and measurements
The stone's outline and its exact millimetre dimensions. Useful check: diameter should match what the seller's photos suggest.
Carat weight
Weight to two decimals. Remember weight is not visual size — a well-cut 0.90 ct can face up larger than a deep-cut 1.00 ct.
Colour grade
D (colourless) to Z. D–F are colourless; G–J near-colourless. In a set ring, F–G is indistinguishable from D to the naked eye.
Clarity grade
FL to I3, based on inclusions at 10× magnification. VS1–VS2 stones are eye-clean — inclusions invisible without a loupe. The report's plot diagram maps each inclusion, which is also how you verify a specific stone matches its specific certificate.
Cut grade (the line to read first)
Excellent to Poor — an overall judgement of proportions, polish and symmetry. This single line predicts sparkle better than any other. Accept nothing below Very Good; ideally Excellent.
Fluorescence
Reaction to UV light, None to Very Strong. None-to-Medium is irrelevant in practice; Strong can rarely cause haziness — worth checking on high colour grades.
Growth method (lab-grown reports)
HPHT or CVD. Neither is better as a category — the stone's individual grades are what count.
The 60-second verification
Every IGI report number verifies online at igi.org (GIA at gia.edu). Type the number, compare carat, colour, clarity and cut with the paper in your hand. If a seller cannot give you a verifiable report number, walk away — there is no legitimate reason for it in 2026.
