Diamond Stud Earrings: The One Piece Every Jewellery Box Needs

Diamantové náušnice pro každý den – ORIZIANO

If you could own one piece of fine jewellery for the rest of your life, it should probably be a pair of diamond studs. No sizing to guess, no occasion required, no trend to outlive. They work with a suit, a swimsuit and a wedding dress. Here is how to choose a pair properly.

Why studs are the smartest first diamond

A ring needs a size. A necklace competes with necklines. Studs simply work — on everyone, with everything, every day. They are also the piece people most often keep for decades and pass on, which is why they are the classic gift for a milestone birthday, a first anniversary or the birth of a child.

Practically, they are also the safest gift to buy without asking: there is no fit to get wrong.

What size to choose

Stud size is measured in total carat weight for the pair. What looks right depends on the effect you want, not on a rule.

Total weight (pair) Effect
0.20 – 0.30 ct Barely-there sparkle. Second piercings, very delicate look
0.40 – 0.60 ct The everyday classic. Visible, never loud
0.80 – 1.00 ct Clearly noticeable. The most requested "proper" stud
1.50 ct + Statement. Catches light across a room

A practical note: because a stud sits flat against the ear, it reads slightly smaller than the same stone in a ring. If you are between two sizes, take the larger.

The 4Cs for studs — what to prioritise

Cut is everything. An ear moves constantly, catching light from every angle. A well-cut stone flashes with every turn of the head; a poorly cut one looks like glass. Never compromise here.

Clarity can be relaxed. Nobody inspects an earlobe with a loupe. VS1–VS2 is entirely eye-clean and costs meaningfully less than VVS.

Colour matters moderately. F–G looks perfectly white against skin. Paying for D adds cost, not visible whiteness.

This is exactly why studs are such good value in lab-grown: you can put the entire budget into cut and size rather than into a certificate grade nobody will ever see.

Settings: how the diamond is held

Four-prong — shows the most stone, maximum light entry. Classic.

Six-prong — more secure, slightly rounder appearance, holds larger stones confidently.

Bezel — a metal rim encircles the stone. The most secure and snag-free, ideal if you never take them off or have small children.

ORIZIANO signature — our Luce Crown studs hold the centre diamond with small diamonds instead of metal prongs, so the stone appears to float in light rather than sit in a claw.

Metal choice

White gold or platinum makes a white diamond look whiter — the most popular choice. Yellow gold is warmer and currently very much in fashion; it also flatters slightly lower colour grades. Rose gold is the most distinctive and suits warm skin tones.

If she wears one metal consistently, match it. If she mixes, white gold is the safest.

Backs: the part nobody thinks about until they lose one

Push backs are standard and fine for everyday wear. Screw backs are far more secure and worth requesting for stones above roughly 1 ct — losing a single stud is the most common way people lose fine jewellery.

Caring for them

Skin oil and hairspray dull diamonds faster than anything. Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush once a month restores full brilliance. Full instructions are in our guide to caring for diamond jewellery.

Frequently asked questions

What size diamond studs are best for everyday wear?

Between 0.40 and 1.00 ct total weight. Around 0.50 ct is the everyday classic; around 1.00 ct is clearly visible while still refined.

Are lab-grown diamond studs a good idea?

Especially so. Studs are seen but rarely inspected closely, so the money is best spent on cut and size — exactly what lab-grown lets you maximise.

Should I buy screw backs?

For stones around 1 ct and above, yes. They are considerably more secure than push backs.

Which metal is best for diamond studs?

White gold or platinum makes the diamond appear whitest. Yellow and rose gold are equally valid and warmer — match what she already wears.

Can diamond studs be worn while sleeping or swimming?

Diamonds are hardness 10 and will not be damaged, but chlorine and impacts can loosen settings over time. Bezel settings and screw backs are the safest for constant wear.
