A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Not an imitation, not a simulant, not "almost". It has the same carbon crystal lattice, the same hardness, the same fire. The only difference is where it grew. Here is everything that actually separates the two — and everything that does not.

The short answer

Mined diamonds formed in the Earth's mantle over roughly one to three billion years. Lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks in a reactor that reproduces the same conditions of heat and pressure. Chemically, physically and optically they are identical. Even a trained gemmologist cannot tell them apart by eye — identification requires specialist equipment that reads growth patterns and trace elements.

The seven differences that matter

1. Origin

The only genuine difference. One is geological, one is technological. Both are carbon crystallised under extreme heat and pressure.

2. Price

The difference customers feel most. A comparable lab-grown stone typically costs a fraction of the mined equivalent. In practice this usually means a larger, cleaner, better-cut stone for the same budget — or the same stone for far less.

3. Environmental and social footprint

Lab-grown production requires no mining: no open pits, no displaced earth, no tailings. Its footprint is essentially the energy used to run the reactor, which increasingly comes from renewable sources. There is also no possibility of conflict-financed origin.

4. Size and quality for the money

Because supply is not constrained by geology, larger and higher-clarity stones are far more accessible. A 1.5 ct lab-grown stone of excellent cut is a realistic purchase at a budget that would buy well under 1 ct mined.

5. Certification

Both are graded by the same laboratories — IGI, GIA — on the same 4Cs. A lab-grown report states the growth method (HPHT or CVD) and, like mined reports, records cut, colour, clarity and carat.

6. Resale value

Here mined diamonds retain more — though far less than people assume. Resale on mined diamonds is typically well below retail too. Neither should be bought as an investment.

7. Availability of fancy colours

Naturally coloured diamonds — pink, blue, yellow — are extraordinarily rare and priced accordingly. Lab-grown makes vivid colour genuinely attainable, which is why our Chromia pieces exist at all.

How lab-grown diamonds are made

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) reproduces mantle conditions directly: a small diamond seed, pure carbon, immense pressure and temperature above 1 400 °C.

CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) grows the crystal layer by layer from carbon-rich gas in a vacuum chamber, at lower pressure. Most modern gem-quality stones are CVD.

Both produce real diamond. The method appears on the certificate.

Are they "fake"? A note on terminology

No — and the distinction matters. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are simulants: different materials that merely look diamond-like, are softer, and behave differently in light. A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant. It is diamond. The correct terms are "lab-grown", "laboratory-created" or "synthetic" — never "fake".

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They have the identical chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness and optical properties as mined diamonds, and are graded by the same laboratories.

Can a jeweller tell the difference?

Not by eye, and not with a standard loupe. Distinguishing them requires specialist instruments that detect growth patterns and trace elements.

Why are lab-grown diamonds cheaper?

Because production takes weeks instead of a billion years, supply is not geologically constrained, and there is no mining cost. It reflects supply, not quality.

Do lab-grown diamonds get cloudy or lose sparkle?

No. Diamond is diamond — hardness 10 on the Mohs scale. It will not scratch, dull or cloud. It needs the same simple cleaning as any diamond.

Are lab-grown diamonds better for the environment?

They avoid mining entirely, so no land disturbance or tailings. Their impact is primarily the electricity used in growth, increasingly from renewable sources.
