Choosing an engagement ring is the rare purchase where emotion and money meet a subject most people have never studied. This guide walks through every decision in the order it actually matters — budget, stone, cut, setting, metal, size — so you can buy with confidence rather than guesswork.
1. Start with the budget, not the ring
Forget the old "three months' salary" rule — it was an advertising slogan from the 1930s, not financial advice. A sensible budget is whatever you can pay without debt. What matters far more is how you spend it.
This is where lab-grown diamonds change the maths. A certified lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined one, but typically costs a fraction of the price. In practice this means one of two things: the same stone for far less, or — more commonly — a noticeably larger, cleaner, better-cut stone for the budget you already had.

2. Understand the 4Cs — and which ones you can compromise on
Every diamond is graded on four criteria. They are not equally important to how a ring actually looks on a hand.

The single most important rule: cut beats everything. A 0.9ct stone with excellent cut will out-sparkle a 1.2ct stone with mediocre cut, every time. Light performance is what people notice across a room — not the number on the certificate.
Where to save: clarity grades of VS1 or VS2 are "eye-clean" — you cannot see inclusions without magnification, yet they cost meaningfully less than VVS or Flawless. Colour grades F or G look perfectly white in white gold or platinum and cost less than D.
3. Choose the shape (the decision she will notice most)
Shape is the most personal choice and the one visible from three metres away.
- Round brilliant — 57 facets engineered for maximum light return. The most brilliant shape and the safest choice if you are unsure. Roughly two thirds of engagement rings.
- Oval — the brilliance of a round with an elongating effect on the finger; looks larger per carat.
- Emerald cut — step-cut facets that produce broad flashes rather than sparkle. Architectural, understated, deeply elegant. Shows clarity, so choose VS1 or better.
- Pear and marquise — distinctive and slimming on the finger, for someone who wants something not everyone has.
- Cushion — softened square with a romantic, slightly vintage character.
- Heart — unmistakably romantic; needs skilled cutting to keep symmetry.
A practical shortcut: look at the jewellery she already wears. Angular, minimal pieces suggest emerald or princess. Soft, classic pieces suggest round, oval or cushion.
4. The setting: how the stone is held
Solitaire — one stone, clean band. Timeless, never looks dated, and puts all the light on the diamond.
Pavé / half-pavé — small diamonds along the band add sparkle and make the centre stone appear larger.
Halo — a ring of small diamonds around the centre stone; visually enlarges it significantly.
Three-stone — past, present, future; also a way to add width without a much larger centre stone.

5. Metal: white, yellow or rose gold
White gold (18kt) is the most requested. It makes a white diamond look whiter and suits cool skin tones. It is rhodium-plated and benefits from re-plating every few years.
Yellow gold is warm and traditional, currently returning strongly to fashion, and forgiving of slightly lower colour grades.
Rose gold is romantic and distinctive, and flatters warm skin tones.
Platinum is denser, naturally white and hypoallergenic — the most durable choice, at a higher price.
The safest guide, again, is what she already wears daily.
6. Getting the size right
The most common source of anxiety — and the easiest to solve. If you have no way to measure at all, EU 53 is the statistically safest choice for a surprise proposal.
7. Certification: never buy without it

8. Timing and the proposal
